The Island Riding Centre opened in July 2017 on the Isle of Wight.

We are a fully insured, council-licensed equestrian centre based on the Isle of Wight (a couple of miles off the southern coast of England), and are members of the Association of British Riding Schools.

Owners Paul and Louise moved to the Island in 2014. Paul’s grandmother grew up on the IOW and the family connections still remain, his parents retired to Ryde 15 years ago and when Paul and Louise’s own children were born 11 years ago they bought their first holiday home here before making the move permanent. Keen to reduce trips back to the mainland they started looking at business opportunities that would combine Paul’s property background, Louise’s love of animals and the best of what the Island has to offer residents and visitors.

The Isle of Wight has a strong tradition in horse riding but when the much loved Brickfields Horse Country closed its doors in 2013 it marked the end of an era having been the premier Isle of Wight riding centre for over 30 years. Picking up from where Brickfields left off they decided on an equestrian complex combined with holiday accommodation to cater for everyone and still be sustainable. In 2015 when the farm in Staplers Road came up at auction it was the right location with potential for expanding into what will be a unique riding and holiday destination and so the Island Riding Centre concept was born.

Having already met and been impressed with Tian and Amy when their daughter started riding lessons they discovered their ambition was to develop a premier riding facility and it was the perfect match.

The centre will be for everyone, young and old, those with limited physical abilities, novice riders to experts and we hope it will not only provide recreational fun, but also help development and – who knows – find the potential riding stars for the future!

We look forward to welcoming you!

Tian Hughes

Tian Hughes

General Manager / Senior Instructor

Tian has been based on the Isle of Wight from an early age, competing as a junior rider within Showjumping and gaining much success on ponies. This continued into his senior career with the guidance and training from a number of professional riders and coaches across the country.

Since his return to the island, Tian has developed his own yard along with a string of successful competition horses, producing youngsters up through the grades and achieving notable successes up to national 1.30m level. As a result of his vast experience in addition to his UKCC qualification, Tian is confident in his ability to coach a wide range of clients of all ages and capabilities.

Amy Hose

Amy Hose

General Manager / Instructor

Amy was born on the Isle of Wight and has been heavily involved within the equestrian community here from an early age. Following her apprenticeship at Lake Farm Equestrian Centre, Amy pursued a freelance career gaining invaluable experience within the industry. A pivotal turning point for Amy’s career came when she took on the role as head groom for Tian as his base, developing an aptitude for schooling and producing young horses for competition and sales. Amy discovered her passion for dressage, and in collaboration with Tian, she sourced her current ride Lenninger. Together they have seen success up to medium level and achieved selection for the BYRDS regional teams.

Amy is passionate about the human resources side of the business and focuses a large amount of time ensuring that our staff receive maximum levels of training and are confident and happy within their daily roles.

Meet the horses and ponies

Alfie

Alfie

11HH / Dartmoor X / 12 years old / Black

Alfie is our mini tank of the yard, he’s only small but he’s very strong – this is great for the fact that as well as being super at being ridden, he also loves to be driven as well. We do have his cart and occasionally take him out as he really enjoys his time in the trap.

Twix

Twix

14.2HH / Cob / 6 years old / Skewbald

Twix is our gorgeous girlie of the yard, she really is stunning. Alongside her lovely looks is also her talented movement, she should really spend her time in the show ring. She can be a little nervous of people to start with but we think as she grows older she will be our superstar of the yard. Twix and Ollie travelled over together and you will often hear them call to one another and stand side by side in the field.

Splash

Splash

15HH / Welsh Section D / 15 years old / Bay

Splash is our quiet lady of the yard. After spent a few years having foals she is now enjoying her life back being worked. She can be a bit timid in the stable so she may stand towards the back of the stable and she is known to be a monkey to catch in the field sometimes but she really enjoys being made a fuss out of and having a good groom.

Ollie

Ollie

16.2HH / Warmblood / 13 years old / Bay

Ollie is our gentle giant of the yard. He is noticed for his size but also for his gorgeous looks. He really is one of the safest horse you will ever meet. He does enjoy a jump though so once he has set his eye on one then he will soon perk up. He does have a big movement though so you may need to hold on tight in the trot so he doesn’t bounce you out of the saddle.

JJ

JJ

14HH / Cob / 6 years old / Skewbald

JJ is our super fun allrounder cob. Although he looks like he may be chunky and not go very fast – don’t be fooled. If JJ wasn’t in our riding school then I’m sure you would find him out on the hunting field at the front jumping everything. He won’t do anything naughty but is known for being quite strong – especially when it comes to jumping as this is definitely his absolute favourite thing to do.

Jasper

Jasper

11HH / Welsh Section A / 17 years old / Grey

Jasper enjoys looking after kids learning to ride on the lead rein and really enjoys pointing his toes occasionally in the show ring aswell. He can be a bit of a lazy monkey when off the lead rein but once he gets going he loves to have a jump. Jasper will stand to be groomed all day as long as he has a haynet to fill his tummy. Feed time is his favourite time of day!

GG

GG

10HH / Welsh Section A / 6 years old / Bay

GG (aka Greedy Guts) quickly steals the hearts of our riders, she may be small but she loves being ridden and enjoying a jump. If you look closely you can notice her one blue eye aswell. She can be known for being a cheeky monkey whilst walking to and from the field as she may not look strong but if she sees nice green grass then she will be taking you for a walk so she can get to it.

Focus

Focus

14.1HH / Welsh X Warmblood
14 years old / Bay

Focus is definitely the biggest character on the yard – he will be used for the more experienced riders and for riders wanting to learn how to jump a bigger fence. Jumping really is Focus’s forte, this is what he was bred to do and he is amazing to watch. Under his lovely looks and his big personality he is a real sweetie though and loves having a fuss made of him.

Crispin

Crispin

13HH / Welsh Section B / 12 years old / Grey

Crispin is great at looking after his riders, but be careful as he is very good at tricking his riders into thinking he is having a wee and happily stand still taking his time. This is his favourite party trick. You may also need to watch your fingers with crispin as he will very easily mistake your fingers for treats and may give them a nibble!

Chester

Chester

14.2HH / Cob X / 24 years old / Chestnut

Chester is our golden oldie. At 24 years old he is very well travelled. He spent 10 years in a riding school in Dubai! And we think this is why he really enjoys his trip out to the beach, he will undoubtedly be the fastest one. He is a real schoolmaster though and perfect for kids learning to ride as he knows his job and loves teaching them how to ride properly and especially learning to jump!

Charlie

Charlie

11HH / Mini Cob X / 6 years old / Tri-coloured

Charlie is our cheeky chappy of the yard. He loves going for little hacks and really looks after his little riders. He is great for confidence as he is a very quiet little guy. He loves his long mane being brushed and having a really good groom. I’m sure he would tell us his favourite part of the day is going back out into the field with all his friends.

Bluebell

Bluebell

13.2HH / Cob / 5 years old / Blue Roan

Bluebell has quickly become a real favourite of the yard. With her gorgeous looks and an amazing temperament to match, there is nothing you can dislike about her! She looks after every rider she has on her back, whether you are a complete novice or more advanced, she just changes to suit everyone!

Bailey

Bailey

15.2HH / Irish Sports Horse / 15 years old / Palomino

Bailey is our gorgeous ‘pink’ schoolmaster horse. He is owned by Gail who is allowing us to use him to his full potential within the riding school as he is such a gentlemen and absolutely brilliant for teaching people to ride. Bailey is a super all rounder and really enjoys his time competing whether its dressage or jumping. Jumping is very exciting for him and we think it is his favourite thing to do.

Lady

Lady

12HH / Dartmoor / 11 years old / Dapple Grey

Lady is our little lady on the yard with a big movement. Her trot is massive for such a little pony although she is not your average looking Dartmoor we still think she is gorgeous. She loves being made a fuss of and enjoying her grooming time!

Princess

Princess

9HH / Shetland / ?? years old / Black

Princess is very much our ‘princess’ of the yard, she is gorgeous to look at and so loveable. She loves looking after the smaller kids when they are learning to ride but be careful as it may be a bit of a bouncy ride! Princess and her best friend Trigger love being together, they stable together and go in the field together, in fact they are never apart!

Trigger

Trigger

8HH / Shetland / ?? years old / Skewbald

Trigger is our smallest of the yard, which really does make him the cutest! Everyone that meets him can’t believe how small he is and this does make him one of the favourites for our youngest kids. Although don’t be fooled by his small size, as this little Shetland has a big personality that he isn’t afraid to show. His favourite part of the day must be going to the field with his best friend Princess.
