Ade Adepitan

TV presenter and paralympic wheelchair basketball athlete Ade Adepitan MBE and rising music star Elle Exxe were the first guests at the Island Riding Centre. There they met some of the riding school ponies and officially opened the centre’s new fibrewax outdoor arena.

Accessible Accommodation

Accessible Accommodation

Using the National Accessible Scheme for Disabled Access as a guide, our accessible accommodation on the Isle of Wight is to a minimum of Mobility Level M1 which is typically suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance.

Four units have a downstairs toilet and shower room and an open plan living, dining and kitchen area.

Two of our holiday units are Mobility Level M2, typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time and can negotiate a maximum of three steps. This person also requires personal or mechanical assistance (e.g. carer, hoist). These units have a downstairs bedroom and large wet room with an accessible WC and optional grab rails and shower wheelchair.

One of our holiday units is Mobility Level 3 Independent (M3i) which is similar to M3a but where a person may be an independent traveller. This particular unit has a purpose built kitchen with a sink and hob that are height adjustable and a side opening oven with resting shelf suitable for a wheelchair user. This unit has a large downstairs bedroom with king size bed accessible from either side and emergency pull cord alarms in both this bedroom and a downstairs wet room which includes an accessible WC and sink with grab rails and optional shower wheelchair.

Accessible Accommodation

The three limited mobility and wheelchair accessible units have added features to the smoke alarm which includes a flashing light and vibrating pillow for those with hearing or sight problems.

All of our accommodation units open off from a courtyard and have low-level thresholds to aid wheelchair access, and parking available immediately adjacent to the holiday accommodation with an electric car charging point.

Our separate bungalow has a large open plan living area with plenty of space to manoeuvre with four bedrooms and four bathrooms meeting the M1 standard.

The bungalow by nature has everything on one level and there are optional ramps, hoist and grab rails available on request for all units.

We are hoping to have a specialist hoist for lifting disabled riders onto a horse by summer 2018, as well as a purpose built mounting ramp.

Moving around the site is made that much more easy with paths, ramps and resting points.
